District Governor’s Message

By:  DG Bob MacKenzie, Kennebunk RC

Happy May everyone! Spring has sprung and as we prepare to go into the summer season, please take time to smell the roses, tulips or whatever has sprung from the long winter’s nap.

May is Youth Services month!  Interact, Rotaract, Youth Exchange, RYLA, District & Global grants that support youth, local service projects, dictionary distribution are just a few examples of how we in Rotary support our youth.  Every one of these positive experiences combat negative experiences.  Our support is vital to keep our youth healthy.  It gives them the best opportunity for a bright future.  At the same time we build relationships with our youth and they in turn will always have a positive perception of Rotary and just might consider joining a club someday for Service Above Self.

Sharing Our Foundation Good News
District 7780 Making an Impact

By:  Nancy Hawes, South Portland - Cape Elizabeth RC

Among the definitions of the verb “share”  is “to give some of what you have to somebody else.” For the past 18 months you’ve been hearing about our District’s “ShareForever” campaign. And that’s exactly what it is – dozens of Rotarians in our district have made plans to “give some of what they have” to the Endowment Fund of The Rotary Foundation so that the earnings will be used to help “somebody else” FOREVER.  You’ll get a final report at the end of the summer with the final campaign numbers –  suffice it to say in the meantime that our district is knocking it out of the park when it comes to allowing the endowment fund to “share” what we have with people who need that sharing.

At a projected 5% rate of return, the gifts our fellow D7780 Rotarians are making will generate $225,000 every year FOREVER. Since Rotary’s SHARE system allows half of donations to the Annual Fund that are not earmarked for one of the Areas of Focus to come back to our district, we will benefit right here in our district; the current gifts are already increasing the funds that our district has control over by $10,000 every year. This amount will continue to grow to over $65,000 EVERY YEAR when the expectancies are realized.

District Outreach Team Reporting

Carol Madsen, Member Philippines Outreach Team, District Newsletter Editor, Bridgton-Lake Region RC

Our Philippines Outreach Team—PDG Dick Hall (Portland RC), AG Joanne Landry (Saco Bay RC), and PP Carol Madsen (Bridgton-Lake Region RC)—has had an extraordinary experience, thanks to the warm hospitality of Filipino Rotarians.

We arrived on Easter weekend, engaged with local clubs and organizations, and explored opportunities for collaboration. We met with an NGO focused on child protection, supported a Rotaract project providing essentials to Mountain People, and visited schools in need of infrastructure improvements. We also identified potential projects in clean water access and vocational training.

Playground Maps
World Map - Coming Soon!
Seven Continents, 195 Countries
Fabulous Community Service and a World of Fun for all Ages

Thanks to the generosity of the Portland Sunrise Satellite Club, the World Map will be available in mid-May for use of District Clubs.

Many of our Clubs have enjoyed painting the US Map on playgrounds in elementary schools across southern Maine.  Did you know that these District 7780 stencils were purchased by Governor Anne Lee Hussey (2010-2011) who was a member of the Portland Sunrise Rotary Club?  Small world!

Contact Dick Hall for more information about the playground maps projects.
